Description & Analysis

Despite a fairly high mintage for a D-Mint nickel of the time, 1918 D is rather scarce in Mint State. Those which have survived are typically of poor quality. Weak strikes from moderately to heavily worn dies are the norm. Circulated examples are likewise scarce, due primarily to this coin type's shallow, exposed dates that wore away within 15-20 years.

There's a nice repunched mintmark variety for 1918 D, but it's hard to make out on a worn coin. Far better known and more popular is the overdate (see next entry).
