Description & Analysis

1918 Philadelphia Mint nickels are fairly plentiful, but not to the extent of other P-Mints nickels from the late 1910s. It's a mystery why the mintage of this issue fell from 1917's figure, when all other denominations were coined in greater numbers.

There are plenty of Mint State coins to meet the needs of average collectors, though gems are very elusive. It's exceedingly rare to find a fully struck 1918(P) nickel, as nearly all are weak at their centers. The coin shown is about as sharp as this issue is found.

A nice doubled-die reverse variety is found with this date, though it's not as pronounced as the DDR for 1917(P).
