Description & Analysis

This was a very high mintage issue, and examples are common across all grades through MS 65. The coin illustrated reveals "woodgrain" toning, which results from incomplete mixing of the copper and nickel. The streaks reveal the action of the planchet strip rolling process.

While the majority of 1917(P) nickels are reasonably well struck, a small handful are extraordinarily sharp from fresh, unworn dies. These coins are the ones periodically submitted for certification as one of the rumored proofs. Each such piece seen by NGC has failed to measure up to the standards of known 1913-16 proofs, though they may still bring some premium for their outstanding quality.

Two doubled-die reverse varieties are known for this issue, though only FS-801 distinctive enough to command general interest and a strong premium. NGC recognizes this DDR under its VarietyPlus Service.
