Description & Analysis

This date is fairly plentiful in Mint State, though most are less than fully struck. The example illustrated is typical.

The 1914/3 overdate resulted from doubling of a working hub, so this feature was transferred to several working dies. That's why the overdate may look different from one coin to another. Being third generation transfers, these overdate nickels are difficult to make out, and even the best ones are faint in comparison to the better known 1918/7 D variety. NGC certified a few specimens until it became evident that it was an overdated hub instead of a single die, and the variety is no longer recognzied by NGC.
