Description & Analysis

This second type of 1913 proof nickel is similar in mintage to the first, but its survival rate is lower. It's possible that not all of the 1,514 pieces struck were actually sold, the remainder being melted at the end of the year.

Gems are rare, since proper storage materials simply didn't exist until decades later. In addition, the muted, satiny finish of proof 1913-16 nickels may have prompted collectors to clean them one or more times in an attempt to give the coins a more "prooflike" appearance.
