Description & Analysis

As in 1840, scholar Walter Breen split this year's mintage into 214,945 Small Dates and 2,168,445 Large Dates. He based these figures on published delivery numbers and dates, knowing that the Small Dates came first (this date style was transitional with 1841).

The Small Dates are the scarcer of the two major varieties. Only two die marriages known, though neither of these is rare (N-1 is illustrated above). The Large Dates comprise seven marriages, and all are common except for N-3, -7 and -9, which are moderately scarce.
