The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Writing in 1994, David Lawrence (The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters) states that the 1908-S is 'one of my favorite dates. Comes with a decent strike and nice luster. Never stays in stock--trouble-free coins of any grade sell immediately.' The popularity of this issue should be obvious if one notes that the original mintage is just 784,000 pieces. Lawrence also notes that this date is 'undervalued in most mint state grades. Even though gems are no bargain compared with some other dates, you should not let one go.'
