Description & Analysis

The 1893-S entered the annals of numismatic history as a low mintage issue. The San Francisco Mint delivered 1.4 million quarters this year, a limited mintage for the era, especially when one considers that the Philadelphia Mint coined 5.4 million pieces in 1893, and the New Orleans facility produced a further 3.3 million coins. Writing in 1994 (The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters), David Lawrence states that the 1893-S is difficult to locate in all grades, especially Fine-XF and throughout the Mint State spectrum.
