The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Although the various Philadelphia Mint coins are rather common, even in the better Mint State grades, this is purely a result of sheer numbers. Over 10 million of these were struck, and many have survived as a matter of chance. They were not saved by collectors in the earliest years after their mintage, as most early collectors vastly preferred Proof examples.
