Description & Analysis

New obverse and reverse hubs were introduced for the dime this year, but the distinctions are quite minor and of interest only to series specialists. 1901(P) dimes used dies from the new obverse hub exclusively, but both the old and new reverse are known for this date. The coin illustrated displays the new reverse on which the lower right ribbon is thicker than on the old reverse.

The generous mintage of this date has provided a fairly rich supply of Mint State coins. Most are well struck with nice to excellent luster, though eroded dies are common and should be avoided by the picky collector. Circulated coins are likewise fairly plentiful.

A couple of repunched date varieties are noted for 1901(P) dimes, and one of these is bold enough to have some general appeal to collectors.
