Description & Analysis

The low production of dimes in 1894-95 finally created enough demand that 1896's production at the Philadelphia Mint reached the two million mark, a figure still well below pre-depression levels.

1896(P) dimes typically are well struck, though die erosion is sometimes evident due to the greater number of coins produced. Mint State pieces in the lesser grades are available, but gems are quite elusive. A few coins are known with semi-prooflike fields.

A very minor misplaced date variety is known in which the top of a 6 is barely visible below the 9 of the date. Of greater interest is a nice repunched date affecting numeral 896. As with all Barber Dimes dated 1894-96, however, the fairly high prices for normal coins limit the premiums attached to either of these varieties.
