Description & Analysis

One of the great American rarities, the 1894-S dime was known as such early on, with collectors seeking to obtain examples by the turn of the 20th Century.

The reason for striking just a few pieces has never been firmly established, and they were likely coined as souvenirs under instructions from the mint's superintendent. It was already obvious by then that the economic depression which had begun the previous year eliminated the need for circulating dime coinage at San Francisco in 1894. Mint documents reveal that 24 examples were struck on June 9, but only nine are confirmed to exist today, two of them well worn.

Traditionally, these coins have labeled as proofs, but that status is debatable. Fresh dies used by the San Francisco Mint in the 1890s routinely produced Prooflike coins, and a mintage of just 24 pieces would not have dulled the dies at all. It matters not, as all unworn pieces have a similar finish, so there are alternative pieces to create a conflict.
