The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
With an original mintage of only 57,900 pieces, business strike 1890 eagles are prized commodities among advanced gold specialists. Extant proof representatives are, however, in the province of an even more select group of numismatists. Of the 63 pieces that emerged from the Philadelphia Mint, both David Akers (1979) and Walter Breen (1988) estimate the surviving population at around 20 pieces.
