Description & Analysis

The Philadelphia Mint coined a mere 117 pieces for the year, the second lowest mintage after the even 100 coined in 1915, which happened to be the final year of proofs for this type. These were struck in the matte proof format, with microscopic facets over the entire surface of the coin, which produce a softer mustard color and lack the reflective nature seen on earlier proofs. Furthermore, the contrast between the fields and devices was eliminated, producing a subtle and harmonious package to examine.
