The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
A rare, low mintage proof striking with only 67 pieces originally struck, out of which perhaps 32 coins may survive today in all grades. Quite a few of the survivors of this date are impaired or low grade, and as a result this date has received a bit more attention from specialists over the years than other dates with comparable mintages. Like the gold dollars from this same decade, there are numerous, deceptive prooflike business strikes that have, in the past, been sold as proofs.
