Description & Analysis

The three-cent piece was still a useful coin in 1872, as its mintage confirms. This status would last only until fractional silver coins began to creep back into circulation in 1875 and return in abundance during 1876-77. After that time its production plummeted.

This date is not truly rare, but Mint State survivors are in relatively short supply, with gems being very scarce. Most are better struck than the early dates (1865-67), but some shallowness may appear on the lower curls of Liberty's hair, the tip of her coronet and the centers of the columnar ones.

One by-product of a lower mintage is a greatly reduced instance of varieties. All that is known for 1872 is a single, quite minor repunched date.
