The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
According to Doug Winter, 'A few small hoards of 1889-S Double Eagles have entered the market from overseas sources. Nearly all of the coins from these groups were heavily bagmarked and graded between About Uncirculated-58 and Mint State-62.'
Bowers' book on double eagles writes: 'The formula for San Francisco Mint double eagles of the 1880s holds true for this, the concluding year: examples are readily available in circulated grades and in Mint State from 60 to 62. Any higher grade coin is rare, curiously so.'
