The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
San Francisco Mint production of Liberty Eagles in 1905 totaled 369,250 pieces. This mintage figure is on par with those of the 1902-S, 1903-S, 1906-S, and 1907-S, a fact that might trick some into labeling the '05-S as a 'generic' date. In reality, the 1905-S is a challenging coin to locate in all grades whose true rarity becomes evident when one crosses the Mint State threshold.
