The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Any Liberty Head eagle in Gem condition is an uncommon coin, relatively speaking, compared to the large numbers produced for many issues in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the large mintages either were outright circulated to a great extent, or exported and melted before the great search for overseas hoards began after the Gold Recall of 1933.
