The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The Philadelphia Mint coined nearly 8 million Eagles between 1880 and 1882, but 1883 began a period of low emissions. Only 208,700 pieces were struck. Nonetheless, in MS60 to MS62 grades, the 1883 can be obtained without much difficulty. In MS63, the 1883 is very scarce, since most survivors were indifferently stored for generations. In MS64, the issue is a significant rarity.
