The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
In terms of both total number of coins known and number of pieces believed extant above the XF grade level, the 1881-CC (24,015 pieces produced) is the most common Carson City Eagle struck prior to 1890. The most accurate estimate on the number of coins extant is 300-400+, with perhaps 30-50 pieces in Mint State (both figures are per Winter and Halperin, 2001).
