The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1873 is one of the five or six rarest dates in the series of Coronet tens according to Akers, and among Philadelphia coins only the 1875 is rarer. Akers estimates that of the 800 business strikes originally minted only 12-15 exist today, while Breen believes that no more than 8-10 survive.
