The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1906 half eagle is widely perceived as a type issue, indeed, Garrett and Guth (2006) describe it as ' ... relatively common in most grades.' Upper Mint State examples, however, are more elusive for the 1906 than for comparable issues, yet prices do not reflect this, leading those authors to describe the issue as 'undervalued.'
