The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Before the Lincoln cent obverse began its 103-year-long (and counting) run, the longevity of the Gobrecht gold design was the benchmark by which other designs were measured. Though the design was on its way out by the time this example was struck in 1903, it had lasted for more than six decades since its first appearance on the half eagle in 1839.
