The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Produced in limited numbers (61,413 pieces), the 1891 is scarcer than any of the following P-mint Liberty half eagles with the exception of the lower mintage (59,063 pieces) 1896. Akers notes that the typical extant 1891 grades either XF or AU, an assessment that we fully support.
