The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
As an issue, the 1870-S (17,000 pieces produced) is more difficult to locate than the already scarce 1868-S, 1869-S, 1871-S, and 1872-S. The absence of Mint State survivors, as well as the dearth of AU representatives, guarantees the present example's place on the Condition Census. Both major grading services report only five examples in AU 55 with a lone AU 58 NGC specimen finer (5/00).
