The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1849-C is among the most available half eagles from this mint. In AU as many as four to five dozen are known and examples can be found in AU55 to AU58 without difficulty. In Uncirculated, an estimated 10 to 12 pieces are known with the finest an incredible NGC MS66 that was first offered as lot 330 in the Bowers and Merena March 1998 auction.
