The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1847-C half eagle has the largest mintage, at 84,100 coins, of any C-mint five, and it is overall among the most available series issues. Doug Winter points out that in high grades, however, it is seen less often than some of the Charlotte issues from the 1850s.
