The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Long before the denomination was discontinued in 1889, the writing was on the wall for the three dollar gold piece. Not since 1878 had the mintage exceeded 6,000 pieces and token productions of 500 to 1,500 business strikes during this period was more the norm than the exception.
A mere 2,300 pieces were issued in this final year, few of which actually entered circulation. Several hundred Uncirculated survivors are available to today's collector thanks to hoarding at the time of issue, but the clear majority of these fail to surpass the MS63 grade level.
