The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1881 three dollar is one of the scarcest in the series. Dave Bowers and Doug Winter, in their United States $3 Gold Pieces (2005), estimate that between 100 to 150 business strike 1881 threes have survived in all grades. The same authors suggest that only 20 to 30 of the extant population are true Mint State pieces.
