Description & Analysis

The 1885 has the fourth lowest business strike mintage--800 pieces--of any Liberty Quarter Eagle coin, next to the 1881, the 1875, and the prohibitively rare 1854-S. One theory for the exceedingly low business strike production is that even as late as the 1880s, individuals could come personally and bring their gold to the mint for conversion into coin of the realm. There was a glut of gold coins, particularly in the East, and no production had been specified. Maybe these precious few coins were produced from direct public demand.
