Description & Analysis

In 1859, James Longacre modified the reverse of the quarter eagle with the result that the arrowheads became smaller and more widely spaced. This new reverse did not immediately displace the old design and both remained in use at the Philadelphia Mint simultaneously through 1861. The 1860 Old Reverse was an unknown issue at the time that Breen wrote his Encyclopedia in 1988. The first example was discovered in a Stack's auction and displayed at the 1991 FUN Convention. Representatives of this variety are much rarer than their 1859 and 1861 counterparts.
