Description & Analysis

On this reverse hub, which the Philadelphia Mint used on Liberty quarter eagles dated 1840-1861, the arrowheads are large and the eagle's talons are closed. A rare variety, the 1859 Old Reverse was discovered in the 1960s. Actually, both varieties of the 1859 Liberty quarter eagle are rare, and this issue was produced to the extent of only 39,364 coins. According to Breen (1988), 24,158 of the quarter eagles produced by the Philadelphia Mint this year were of the Old Reverse variety.
