The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1856-D quarter eagle is the rarest coin ever produced at the Dahlonega mint. With a mintage of just 874 pieces, it is the only coin from this mint with an original mintage figure of less than 1,000. There are an estimated 40-45 survivors known, including seven to nine in About Uncirculated.
