The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Readily available in the MS60 to 63 grade range due to the existence of a hoard, but as with so many other issues in the 19th-century U.S. gold series, only a small coterie of Uncirculated survivors can claim membership in the MS65 category, a claim that is attested by NGC population data.
