The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Only 4,000 examples were struck. Since the entire mintage was not delivered until January 22, 1846 no record of the 1845-O quarter eagle is found in the 1845 New Orleans Mint Director's Annual Report. Approximately 55-65 pieces are known with many of these grading Fine to Very Fine. In choice Extremely Fine, the '45-O becomes a rare issue and there are fewer than ten known in About Uncirculated. The 1845-O is easily the rarest New Orleans quarter eagle and it is one of the dozen rarest Liberty Head quarter eagles.
