The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
While 11,622 pieces were struck, this date is scarcer than generally believed, especially in higher grades. The Mint was burned in July 1844 by a burglar and production was halted until early 1846. Because of this, 1844-C quarter eagles tend to have a lower survival rate than other dates of this era and most are found well worn. Only five Uncirculated 1844-C quarter eagles are believed known and there may only be 16-21 properly graded AUs.
