The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
While the 1843-O Small Date is the most common quarter eagle produced at the New Orleans Mint, its Large Date counterpart is an unsung rarity that is most often encountered in grades below the About Uncirculated level of preservation. Writing in 1992, Winter (New Orleans Mint Gold Coins: 1838-1909) stated: 'I have never personally seen a piece which graded higher than MS 60 and only a few which even graded this high.'
