The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1842-O began with a modest mintage of only 19,800 pieces, lowest among quarter eagles from the New Orleans Mint. Only 65-70 coins are believed extant in all grades, the '42-O ranking second in overall rarity among O-mint quarter eagles, second only to the 1845-O. The '42-O is also a significant condition rarity, and Winter (1992) states that 'the great majority of extant 1842-O Quarter Eagles grade Very Fine.'
