The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1838 Classic Head quarter eagles are very hard to locate in Mint State preservation and nearly impossible when of Choice or Gem quality. The mintage of this issue was pegged at 47,030 coins, with nearly all immediately entering circulation. This entire mintage was accomplished with just a single die pairing, so far as we know, for there has never been a second die variety of this date discovered.
