The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Throughout the 1940s, numismatists considered P-mint Peace dollars such as the 1925 to be scarcer than the 1934-S. While this may seem ridiculous to collectors today, one must remember that rumors of endless bags of 1934-S dollars in storage at the San Francisco Mint were plentiful enough to delude the numismatic community at the time. Apparently, stories such as this circulated widely enough throughout the 1950s to allow dealers to overlook their constant hankering for Mint State pieces of this issue. Like most silver dollar issues, the 1934-S met its judgement day in the form of the Treasury releases of the 1940s through 1960s. While these releases proved sufficient to banish some silver dollar issues such as the 1885-CC and 1903-O to relative obscurity, they also placed the 1934-S atop its current throne and crowned it 'King of the Peace Dollars.' Over the course of these three decades, only 1-3 bags of Mint State survivors of this issue emerged from the California branch mint. The remainder were undoubtedly released into circulation during the 1930s and suffered the attrition that was their fate. Today, issues such as the 1923-S, 1924-S, and 1928-S outrank the 1934-S in terms of rarity at the gem Uncirculated grade level. The crown, however, still resides atop the 1934-S as it is the rarest Peace dollar in terms of total known specimens.
