The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The mintage of this issue approached 7 million coins, none of which were actually needed in commerce, thus virtually the entire mintage remained in storage, later being sent to circulation during the 1940s and 1950s. Before the late 1930s, this date was actually considered to be a major rarity in the series. It was apparently in the fall of 1938 that quantities were released from the Treasury.
