The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Wayne Miller asserts that the 1883-O is one of the seven most common Morgan Dollars in Mint State along with the 1881-S, 1884-O, 1885-O, 1886, 1887, and 1921. Current NGC and PCGS population data upholds this assertion, but only for coins that grade MS 60-65. At the MS 67 level, the '83-O is a significant rarity, and neither service has seen a single coin finer. The large number (8.7 million pieces) of coins produced resulted in a wide variety of striking quality for this issue.
