The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
One of the rarest of all Seated halves with only 60,000 pieces minted. In the large Guatemala hoard of Civil War S-mint halves that was discovered in the mid-1950s, there were no 1866-S coins, indicating that they were not hoarded. As a result, survivors are elusive in all grades with no more than 4 or 5 that exist in mint condition.
