The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
After a one-year hiatus, the San Francisco Mint returned to quarter dollar production in 1905 with a mintage of 1.8 million pieces. The lack of an S-mint delivery in 1904 probably resulted in considerable economic demand for the '05-S issue, and, indeed, this date is equally as elusive as the 1904-O and 1905-O in Mint State.
