The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
It is uncertain how many 1849-O and 1850-O quarters were struck--and how many survived the mass meltings of the 1850s, when silver rose as reckoned in gold dollars, due to the vast California discoveries. The 1849-O delivery was included in the 1850-O number, but the 1849-O is much rarer.
