The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
This is perhaps the rarest pre-1853 Seated quarter. Although its mintage continues to be a mystery, prominent numismatists speculate that the New Orleans Mint's delivery of 396,000 quarters in 1850 included about 16,000 pieces dated 1849. Whatever the actual mintage figure may be, there is little doubt that heavy circulation and widespread melting during the peak of the California Gold Rush both took their toll on this limited issue.
