Description & Analysis

1805 is by far the most common date of this series, and it is a perennial favorite with type collectors as one of the very issues found in higher grades.

The published mintage figure is derived from two deliveries made during 1805: 67,540 in September and 53,240 in December. It can't be said with certainty which dates these coins bore. It's quite possible that the first delivery included 1804-dated dimes, while the delivery of June 1807 may have included some dated 1805.

A single obverse was paired with two reverse dies to create two die marriages. This first one having five berries (or olives) on the branch and wide letters A is the scarcer of the two, though neither is rare. A number of Mint State survivors are known, and these are highly prized.
