Description & Analysis

Typically with early Mint records the published figures for a particular calendar year are not a reliable guide to the number of coins bearing that date. In the case of 1802, however, just a single delivery occurred on July 22, and from this is derived the number included here.

Four die marriages are known for 1802 dimes. Two obverse dies were used, but each of the marriages had a different reverse.

None of these varieties are common, but JR-4 (photos) is the one most often encountered. JR-1 is the rarest, the second example known having been discovered by NGC in 2013. This variety shares a reverse die with the 1802 BD-3 quarter eagle and the 1803 JR-1 dime.
