Description & Analysis

Some 20 proofs were coined of the 1837 half dime to commemorate the launch of this new design. One went to the Mint's own cabinet, now a part of the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution. The others were presented to various VIPs, and 10-12 are known to have survived the years.

All of these proofs are of the Large Date variety and reveal no less than three punchings of numeral 8.
